Yesterday afternoon I arrived home from doing some orientation things with my group and I still had more than two hours of daylight to burn (The sun comes up here at 5:30 and it is dark by 5:30--nice 12 hour days and nights!) so I decided to go for a run. I fugured this would be a good way to get to know my neighborhood as well as get out of the house and exercise a bit.
I asked my host mother if it would be okay if I went for a run--she kind of looked at me funny--but she said it was, so off I went. Just as I took my first stride on the street, it started raining. And the rain here in Costa Rica is not just any old rain--when it rains, it really rains. Regardless, I went on. It was actually a lot of fun getting soaked and dodging cars, potholes, and slippery sidewalks. But the best part by far was seeing peoples´ reactions to me. Besides the normal whistles and `machas´(white girl) that any US gringo will get, I also got a few comments like `chistosita´(funny little girl) and `loca´ (crazy girl). I guess it´s not really normal to go for a run in Costa Rica, especially if you are a girl and most especially when it is raining... at least I gave the Ticos a good laugh!

Rachywa! I have a blog now too! Hooray! I love and miss you like crazy!
Thanks for blogging about your trip!
I went to Costa Rica and spent time in San Jose and Limon a few years ago! Love the people and the food was amazing! Enjoy yourself!!
i thought about this post on my run today. but, my run was sunny and without men hooting at me...thank goodness.
but on my walk to work the other day a VERY VERY VERY LARGE (horse-like) poodle followed me. it was kinda embarrassing. it wouldn't leave me alone. it was ugly.
love you boo and miss you too!
Are you still running? Who do you run with now? We went for a short hike up by Rainier this weekend with Shelly's kids. I ended up having to run back to the car with Diva at the midpoint because dogs weren't allowed further and a ranger was on his way. No admiring looks from hikers I passed -- just guffaws. You'll need to stay in shape to be part of the Ultimate team when you get back, now that it's A league!
